Learning Outcome 1

The process of revision is a constant work in progress. At the beginning of the semester, my revisions were not nearly as in-depth as they are now at the end of the semester. I have learned to determine which changes are necessary for each individual essay that I have written. In my Showcase Writing Project, I made a number of significant changes between my first draft and my final draft. After peer reviewing I felt more confident in establishing which revisions I should make to reach my final draft, those revisions included global changes and local changes. The global changes I was able to make involved clarifying my claims, reorganizing or adding paragraphs, and analyzing quotes in a more effective way. In my first draft, I felt like I was off to a good start but I didn’t know exactly where my thoughts were going, so I wasn’t very specific with certain aspects like my claims and analyses. My claims were weak to begin with, but peer reviewing and self-reflection allowed me to fix this. As you can see in my first and final drafts, I specified my second claim sentence from “When I interviewed my mom in the podcast we created, my mom talked about how the death of her mother shaped who she is today.” to “Lessons learned from our life experiences can change our outlook on the future.” In the first draft, my claim sentence was hardly that, it lacked a clear stance on my argument and it was lost in the paragraph. In the final draft, my claim sentence was clear and direct. It specifically stated my argument and led the reader to see what my paragraph would entail. I also made local edits that involved sentence structure, such as grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
