Upon reading Michael Erard’s “See Through Words” for a second time I definitely had a different experience. I experienced a more enhanced reading, and it gave me a more intellectual view on his article and metaphors in general. I took a deeper look into his meanings behind making a metaphor, such as what makes it good or bad and what strategies to use to make a metaphor. He spoke about the metaphor of the orchid and the dandelion when comparing different types of kids. The public had a completely different reaction than what was intended by the author. It opened my eyes to how complicated the design process can be. Erard discussed how designers have to be sensitive to peoples’ cultures and their preconceived views. If it’s a good metaphor it can change their perception for the better or generate new ways of thinking about what’s being spoken about. I reacted differently to his claim about his metaphor for an argument- that it’s a war. Our class discussion about this particular quote from the article made me realize the power of metaphors. This specific one seems to grab you by the hand and pull you along; it makes you agree and see things from his perspective. Most metaphors can have the ability to do that. “Glossing the text” helped me gain a better understanding of his meaning behind “pseudo-mistakes“. They’re intentional mistakes used to compare two seemingly uncommon things that share one unobvious trait in the sense of making metaphors. These can be very beneficial to designing a metaphor. By the end of my reading and analyzing for a second time I felt that I gained a positive insight and even a new outlook on metaphors. Perhaps now metaphors will stick out to me when I hear them in conversation or when I see them in texts.

  1. You write, “Perhaps now metaphors will stick out to me when I hear them in conversation or when I see them in texts.”

If this happens, let me know! Feel free to share with the class. Metaphors are everywhere! It can be fun to point them out.

Your link looks great. Nice job!
