I feel that I’m getting closer to reaching my annotating goals because I’ve been better at making connections with the text.

The surrounding context for this essay is on the front page. It gives a brief background of Yo-Yo Ma. It also gives a brief introduction to the article and a brief synopsis. His article was first published in January 2014 on the World-Post in Switzerland. Yo-Yo Ma is the author of this article along with many other achievements. His bio discussed his numerous accomplishments such as being a cellist and songwriter who began at just 5 years old. It mentions that he has won over 17 Grammy Awards along with many others. It also states that he is a graduate of Juilliard and Harvard University.

The circumstantial context is the purpose of reading this article and the circumstances that surround my personal reading experience. The purpose of this article is to read into how important art is for the education of our children, the success of Society, and the blend of cultures. Art is necessary for empathetic feelings which help us connect with others. Personally, I enjoyed reading this because I found myself either agreeing with what Yo-Yo Ma had to say or learning something new. While reading this article, I felt that it was hard to concentrate at times because I read in my room where there are countless distractions. So that literal circumstance affected my reading experience.

The intentional context is the scope of the article and the purpose. The scope of this article is how art and science must be intertwined in order to reach their full potential. Art is important for the empathetic reasoning of things while science falls into critical thinking. Yo-Yo Ma’s article really gets you to think about the importance of art in our world.
